Last updated: February 15, 2026
1. Introduction
This privacy policy describes how Synapse | Multi-Tab Search ("Synapse", "we", "our", or "the extension") collects, uses, stores, and shares user data. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.
2. Data We Collect
2.1 Account Information (collected when you sign in)
- Email address - obtained via Google OAuth sign-in
- Display name - obtained via your Google profile
- Profile picture URL - obtained via your Google profile
- Unique user ID - generated by our authentication service
This data is collected only when you voluntarily sign in with your Google account. You can use basic extension features without signing in.
2.2 Usage Data (stored locally on your device)
- Search usage counts - number of searches performed, stored locally to manage free-tier limits
- Deep Search usage counts - weekly usage tracking for the Deep Search feature, stored locally
- Search history - your recent search queries, stored locally on your device
2.3 User Preferences (stored locally and synced via Chrome)
- Extension settings - your chosen preferences such as search engine, theme, and display options, stored via Chrome's sync storage
2.4 Payment Information
- Premium subscription status - whether you have an active paid subscription
- Payment processing is handled entirely by our third-party payment provider, ExtensionPay (extensionpay.com). We do not collect, process, or store your credit card numbers, billing address, or other financial details.
3. How We Use Your Data
- Account information - to authenticate you, manage your user profile, and determine your subscription status
- Usage data - to enforce free-tier usage limits and provide usage history to you
- User preferences - to personalize your extension experience and sync settings across your Chrome browsers
- Payment status - to unlock premium features for paying subscribers
We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or selling to third parties.
4. How We Store Your Data
4.1 Local Storage
Search history, usage counts, and session tokens are stored locally on your device using Chrome's chrome.storage.local API. This data never leaves your device unless you sign in, in which case only your authentication session is used to communicate with our servers.
4.2 Synced Storage
Extension settings and preferences are stored using Chrome's chrome.storage.sync API, which syncs across your signed-in Chrome browsers. This is managed entirely by Google Chrome.
4.3 Server-Side Storage
If you sign in, your user profile (user ID, email, and premium status) is stored on our servers hosted by Supabase (supabase.co), a cloud database provider. Data is transmitted securely over HTTPS and access is restricted to authenticated users.
5. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We share data with the following third-party services, only as necessary to operate the extension:
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any other third parties. We do not use analytics or tracking services.
6. Web Page Access
The extension requires access to web pages (via the <all_urls> permission) solely to inject the floating action button (FAB) interface that allows you to use Synapse features on any page. The extension does not read, collect, or transmit the content of web pages you visit.
7. Data Retention
- Local data (search history, usage counts, settings) - retained on your device until you clear extension data or uninstall the extension
- Server-side profile - retained as long as your account is active. You may request deletion by contacting us (see Section 11)
- Payment records - retained by ExtensionPay per their data retention policies
8. Data Deletion
You can delete your data at any time:
- Local data - uninstall the extension or clear its data through Chrome's extension management page (chrome://extensions)
- Server-side data - sign out of the extension and contact us to request full account deletion
- Synced settings - clear via Chrome's sync settings or by resetting extension preferences
9. Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your data:
- All server communications use HTTPS encryption
- Authentication tokens are stored securely in Chrome's local storage
- Server-side data access requires valid authentication
- We do not store passwords; authentication is handled via Google OAuth
10. Children's Privacy
This extension is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
